Is it okay for a police officer to run a red light?
The other day I’m sitting in traffic, waiting for a red light, when from the back I see a police motorcycle approaching. He is doodling along, with his visor up, clearly in no hurry to go anywhere. Yet, he slowly weaves his motorbike between the lines of idling cars and proceeds to run the red light at a leisurely pace. I bet he didn’t for one moment consider the signal he was sending! No wonder Zambia is where it is. The police serve as the extended arm of the executive, and that police officer’s complete disregard for the law said it all. Our public officers seem happy to settle back in the belief that they are now deserving of privileges or special treatment. That sense of misguided entitlement will always get in the way of good governance, and is one of the main reasons that Zambia is such an unequal society, where the majority of the population still wallow in poverty.
