A future president?
Our new finance minister is rather inspiring. Having hit the ground running, his wife must be missing him a lot these days, since he is busy touring the country, having consultations with just about anyone you can think off. His style is a breath of fresh air in politics, after five years of government seemingly believing that the truth must be concealed from the nation at all costs. In the past five years, government has lied about everything from the state of the late President’s Sata health to the cause of Zambia’s economic problems. On the contrary, Felix Mutati is open, transparent and honest. He has assumed responsibility for Zambia’s problems, and he has promised our key investors stability and dialogue rather than threats. He is putting his predecessor to shame, along with several of his colleagues in the new cabinet, whom have been completely mute about the way forward since being sworn in. In fact, Mutati seems to be something as unusual as a good politician… at least so far, and since he is a seasoned politician, with roots going back to the MMD government, one can hope that he is past the stage where personal enrichment will derail him from the path. Clearly ambitious, he has already proven that he can play the messy political game by climbing to his current position. We may be looking at a future president!
