Chiefs should stay neutral
The reports of chiefs backing President Lungu in this week’s elections curiously increased after government announced that it had increased chief’s salaries from K4,000 a month to between K10,000 and K15,000. However, the Times of Zambia pushed it a bit too far this week, when it reported that 286 chiefs were backing Lungu. The thing is that Zambia only has 4 paramount chiefs, 43 senior chiefs and 241 chiefs – 288 in total – which makes the newspaper’s story highly unbelievable. Nevertheless, many chiefs have indeed publically backed Lungu, and this is problematic, when chiefs are traditional leaders for everyone. Chiefs should rise above politics, and let their subjects make up their own minds about who to vote for.
