When tempers flare at roadblocks
The police this week warned motorists against attacking traffic officers on duty in the wake of an increase in incidents of this kind. Apparently, four officers in Lusaka and two on the Copperbelt have recently been injured in clashes with motorists. Well, I am not surprised. I have spent a lot of time studying the public relation skills of the police in Lusaka recently, for the simple reason that they seem to have taken their enthusiasm for impromptu roadblocks to entirely new levels. Every day, I am queuing at one or two roadblocks in new locations on my way home from work. And I can report that tempers are really flaring in the general atmosphere of trying to squeeze as much money out of motorists as possible. It is about time that government once again directed the police to check their enthusiasm for roadblocks.
