Government is considering exporting 120,000 tonnes of maize to Angola (20,000 tonnes) and the DR Congo (100,000 tonnes) as per the two countries’ requests. The export would be carried out on a government-to-government basis. Government has banned the export of maize in an effort to ensure that Zambia does not run out before the 2016/17 crop is in store, as the Food Reserve Agency is sitting on less than 300,000 tonnes, but the Zambia National Farmers’ Union has argued that Zambia is sitting on a surplus of 230,000 tonnes of maize, when including maize held by farmers, millers and grain traders.
