Government has announced that there will be no salary increments for civil servants until the economy has fully recovered. “If we are going to channel the revenue that we are collecting at the moment to increased salaries, we will not reach our target for recovery. We are currently trying hard to reduce the pressure of borrowing,” Chief Government Spokesperson Kampamba Mulenga stated. The wage freeze did not come as a surprise. It has been predicted by many as a prerequisite for an aid package from the International Monetary Fund.
Meanwhile, the Zambian Watchdog reported that public workers had been offered a salary increment of 4%, citing unnamed “sources at Cabinet Office”, but this could easily have been made up.
