Zambia will honour the late freedom fighter Salome Kapwepwe, 90, with a state funeral, complete with three days of national mourning on 11-13 May. Kapwepwe passed away in her sleep at her Kasembo Farm in Chinsali, Muchinga Province. Kapwepwe played an active role in the freedom fight in Zambia, but she is often overshadowed by her late husband, Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe, Zambia’s second vice-president and an iconic freedom fighter. “On behalf of the government of the republic of Zambia and indeed on my own behalf, I wish to convey my heartfelt condolences to the Kapwepwe family and the people of Chinsali in Muchinga Province on the loss of our great mother, whose contribution to Zambia’s liberation struggle will always be cherished,” stated President Lungu.
