Makeni Ecumenical Centre is a Christian non-profit institution in Makeni, Lusaka, which provides primary, secondary and vocational education, as well as clinics, family planning services, and an AIDS orphan village. However, one of the centre’s more unusual projects is the initiative of offering unemployed, destitute, landless or slum dwellers the opportunity to train in agriculture and then go back to rural areas in five settlement villages in Kafue, Mwembeshi, Chisamba, Mwomboshi and Kalwelwe. This project goes back to 1972, and almost 300 families have been resettled, but donor funds have dried up, and with them the project’s momentum. If you want to contribute, the centre needs books, building tools, agricultural materials, personnel and new partners or cash. Volunteers are also welcome.
