MMD Lunte MP Felix Mutati has continued his countrywide tour to mobilise MMD members, even though the High Court in March 2016 upheld his expulsion from the former ruling party. The MMD expelled Mutati in February 2016 for secretly working with the opposition UPND party, after Mutati and other MMD MPs challenged the MMD’s decision to form an alliance with the current ruling PF party. Mutati has however appealed the High Court’s ruling to the Supreme Court.

Mutati’s ally, suspended MMD National Secretary Mwansa Mbulakulima, also maintained that the MMD would hold a national convention on 20-22 May 2016 to elect new party leaders, although Mumba’s camp maintained that there would be no convention, as Mumba’s five-year tenure only expires in 2017.

Mumba was elected MMD’s fourth president in May 2012, beating his closest rival, Felix Mutati, by a large margin. However, he has struggled to unite the MMD ever since. The former ruling party is thus nothing but a shadow of its former self.
