Female MPsThe new parliament counts 26 women amongst its 156 elected members, equivalent to 16.7%, the highest ever seen in Zambia, although the figure is likely to change slightly, once the 8 nominated MPs are added to the equation. The former MMD government set the earlier record of 14% under President Banda, but the percentage dropped to 11%, when President Sata’s PF party took over in 2011. Yet, there is little to be proud of, as Zambia falls short of SADC’s and AU’s target of 50% by 2015.

Both of the main parties (PF and UPND) adopted just under 20% female parliamentary candidates, despite the PF promising beforehand that it would adopt 40%.
