Government this week started shaking up the mining sector by looking into the number of expatriates occupying jobs that could be handled by Zambians. Chief Government Spokeswoman Kampamba Mulenga stated: “We have a lot of jobs in the mining sector, but most of them have been taken by foreigners”. The Mineworkers Union of Zambia welcomed the move, saying it was overdue. Last month, authorities suspended the renewal of employment permits for expatriates until further notice, explaining that it was dissatisfied with the mining sector in particular and its poor efforts at training Zambians to take over from expatriates.
