The tripartite agreement meant to lower the price of mealie meal is looking more likely to reach its goal after the Millers’ Association of Zambia announced that a total of 30 millers are now enrolled in the agreement. Initially, only 9 millers partook, making a countrywide drop in mealie meal prices unattainable. In January 2017, government announced that it expected mealie meal prices to drop to an average of K85 a 25 kg bag of breakfast meal from over K100 as a result of the tripartite agreement, which involves off-loading of subsidised maize from the grain traders and/or the Food Reserve Agency to the millers.
