The Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) has raided CEC Liquid Telecom (picture) and other ICT firms. Some reports said ZICTA had confiscated equipment used for phone tapping after a phone conversation between President Lungu’s spokesman, Amos Chanda, and Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja was leaked to social media (see HH arrested for treason). Others claimed the raid was spurred by government wanting to clamp down on online commentators using aliases. However, this was denied by ZICTA, which stated that Liquid Telecom had allowed seven unregistered companies to use its infrastructure, which had resulted in the loss of millions of Kwacha in government taxes. Liquid Telecom also denied the phone tapping rumours.
